David Richard ‘Gump’ Simmons
SIMMONS, David Richard ‘Gump’ – passed away surrounded by the love of his family at Stedman Community Hospice in Brantford on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, in his 77th year. Beloved husband and best friend of Gail for more than 55 years. Loving father to Todd and Chad and daughter-in-law Jody, all of Port Dover. Devoted and proud grandpa of Ben and Addie. Dear brother of Elaine Earle. Brother-in-law to George and Marie Burke, Leo Maloney, Dave & Bette Eke, and Jim McAlpine. Dave will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends, old and new, from all walks of life. Predeceased by his parents Albert (Ches) and Irene Simmons, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Harold Earle, Jim and Sharon Pond, Dennis Thomson, Russell Thomson, Anne McAlpine, and parents-in-law Cam and Madeline Thomson. Dave was a lifelong resident and community member of Port Dover and enjoyed coaching hockey and baseball. Dave was an outdoorsman, spending many days working outside, fishing, hunting, boating, and camping. His special connection with horses has turned into a family affair. No matter where Dave bumped into you, he took time to chat and catch up on things. Dave’s greatest love and enjoyment came from spending time with his grandkids as well as watching them play sports. He will be fondly remembered by all.
A Graveside Service and Celebration of Life will be held to honour Dave’s life. The graveside service at Port Dover Cemetery Columbarium will be held Sunday, September 14, 2025, at noon. The Reverend Kathryn Vance officiating, followed by a celebration of life at Royal Canadian Legion Simcoe Branch #79, 200 West St., Simcoe (lower level) from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Come and share your memories.
