Donald Verwey
VERWEY, Donald Joseph – Passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the age of 86. Don lived a full, rich life, which began in Hamilton, Ontario, and ended in Port Dover, Ontario, where he and his late wife Ann finally found their “forever” home. He worked as a skilled auto mechanic for 45 years and never really stopped—he continued tinkering long after retirement, customizing his Dodge Rampages and always being the go-to guy for any family car question. His home garage also doubled as his wood-working shop, where he crafted furniture and decorative items not just for the home he and Ann shared, but also for family members. Don had a knack for figuring things out, and cleverly “MacGyvered” a number of ingenious projects over the years. Don was an avid fisherman and boater for most of his life. He was often happiest with a fishing rod in hand, on a lake in his boat. He especially looked forward to the annual fishing trip to Ruth Lake with his two best buds—a tradition that spanned 40+ years. A lover of country music (with a special spot for Hank Williams Jr. and Waylon Jennings), Don was always up for a good time. Whether at a marina, a cottage, a trailer park, a golf course, or a social event, Don enjoyed spending time with people. He was well liked and respected, and he will be missed in the community and in his neighbourhood. Don was devoted to his two daughters and their families and always looked forward to times spent with them, including his three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Don took things in stride. He never took himself too seriously and he had a good sense of humour. For family, his “reverse euphemisms” and acronyms are famous. His wit remained intact, and he continued to bring laughter to family, friends, and the hospital staff until the very end. He will be missed by many, including his sister, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and close friends. Though no longer with us, his phrases, stories, spirit, and legacy, live on.
A casual, drop-in open house will be held in Don’s honour on Sunday, September 28, from 2–5 p.m. at 63 Thompson Drive, Port Dover. SERENITY BURIAL AND CREMATION SERVICES INC., 361 Main Street.
