GIBBONS, Shirley Leona (Porter) – Passed away peacefully on October 4, 2025, at Cedarwood Village in her 88th year, after a four-year courageous battle with cancer. Predeceased by her husband of 63 years, George (December 11, 2021). Cherished mother of Christine (Dean) Vallis, Karen (Glen) Wallace, and George Gibbons (Sharie Edwards). Proud and loving grandmother of Matthew Wallace (Kandice Butler), Jason (Kelsey) Wallace, Tyler Wallace (Holly Tuck), Adam Vallis, Quinn Gibbons, Graham Gibbons, Maisie Gibbons, and great-granddaughter Evelyn Wallace. Dear sister and sister-in-law of Doug Mitchell,
Janis (Alvin) Robinson, Peter Porter, Bonnie McCrae, Linda (Mike) Kates, Sherry (Rich) Maxwell, Ken Porteous, David (Carol) Gibbons, and John (Marilyn) Gibbons. Also, survived by many nieces, great-nieces, nephews and great-nephews. Predeceased by her parents Neil and Hazel Porter and parents-in-law Horace and Lily Gibbons, siblings and in-laws, Ann Mitchell, James Porter, Judy Porter, Carl McCrea and Lois Porteous. Shirley had a deep love for her family, hosting many July 1 celebrations and family get-togethers. Many will remember Shirley as a bus driver for Ryerse Bus Lines for over 25 years, driving through snow and ice to pick up both elementary and high school students. When not driving the bus, she was the bookkeeper for G&H Fisheries, owned by her husband George and friend, Claire Hammond. Shirley was a recipient of the Ontario Volunteer Service Award given by the Government of Ontario. She enjoyed volunteering in the community, spending many hours at the hospital gift shop as a life member for the Norfolk General Hospital Volunteer Association and volunteering for many years at the Norfolk County Fair. She was also an active member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, singing in the choir and providing her services to St. Paul’s Club. During retirement, Shirley and George wintered in Bradenton, Florida, as snowbirds for many years. We would like to thank the staff at Cedarwood over the last one and a half years where they made her feel at home.
A Service to Celebrate Shirley’s life will be held on Friday, October 10, 2025, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Anglican Church (Market and St. George Sts.), Port Dover, followed by interment at Port Dover Cemetery. Bishop Barry Clarke and The Reverend Tony Bouwmeester officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to THOMPSON WATERS FUNERAL HOME, Port Dover, 519-583-1530.
