Greg Deming
DEMING, Gregory Thomas. Passed away July 27, 2013 at L.H.S.C. Parkwood Hospital, in his 47th year. Forever loved by his mother, Judy Husted Coombs (Doug) and his brothers Jeff (Angelique), their sons Jeffery and Adam; Steve (Melody), their children Carilyn, Krystal and Alex. Following Greg’s wishes there will be no visitation or service. Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will take place.

Hertha Hunter
HUNTER, Hertha. Peacefully passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at Leisureworld Care Centre, Elmira at the age of 87 years. Beloved wife of the late George Hunter (1999). Dear mother of Cathy Meggison of Guelph and Nancy (Rick) Stonard of Vancouver Island. Also lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Rowan (Chris) Atkinson, Ernie (Katie) Meggison, Ben (Jenni) Meggison and Jenny Meggison; Peter (Dani) Stonard, Jeffrey Stonard and by her great-grandchildren Rebecca, Elisabeth, Julia, Timothy, Craig and Lennon. Aunt of Karen Johnson of Belleville. At Hertha’s request cremation has taken place. To celebrate Hertha’s life a family gathering will be held at a later date. A memorial service will be held at Grace United Church in Port Dover on Thursday, August 8, 2013 between the times of 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. with visitation until 4 p.m. Everyone welcome.

Fred Lawrence
Lawrence, Fred D. – With great sadness Fred Donald Lawrence passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 20, 2013 just one week shy of his 85th birthday. Beloved husband of Merle (nee Pries). Loving father of Steven (Toronto, ON), Janet (Vancouver, B.C.), Brenda (Etobicoke, ON) and Craig and his wife Tanya (Georgetown, ON). Grandfather of Sarah (Chris) Lahaie, Katherine and Peter Lawrence and their mother Janet Tombs. Great-grandfather of Lucien, Marcus and Alexander Lahaie. Predeceased by his sisters Thelma Luckham, Elaine Jewell, Marie Pew and by his brother George Lawrence. Survived by his sister-in-law Agnes Lawrence. Brother-in-law of Fran (John) Sandfort, Elaine (Carl) Peterson, Wayne (Judy) Pries and Gail (Keith) Bennett. Loved by many nieces and nephews. Fred moved to Georgetown in 1949, having been drafted from Port Dover to the Georgetown Raiders Intermediate “A” hockey team. He retired from Ford Motor Company after 30 years. Merle and Fred have lived at their same Georgetown residence for over 55 years. His home, family and friends were his passion; a proud father and generous soul will be greatly missed. Friends will be received at the J.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home, 11582 Trafalgar Rd., north of Maple Ave., Georgetown 905-877-3631 on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial service will be held in the chapel on Thursday, July 25, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Cremation has taken place. Maurice Long
LONG, Maurice (Moe) William. Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at his Brantford home in his 79th year. He was surrounded by his best friend and wife, Theresa, and his three loving and devoted daughters Michele Moore of British Columbia, Tracy Johnson (Phil), and Lisa Kyle (Darrin). He will be greatly missed by his brothers Walter Long (Barbara – deceased), Merritt Long (Arlene), and his sister Joyce Vokes (Vic). He was a wonderful grandfather to Kate, Alexandra, Sydney, Bernadette, and Adam. He will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, and a large group of good friends. He was born and raised in Port Dover, the youngest son of the late Clifford and Constance Long. He attended Port Dover Public School and Simcoe High School. Maurice was an Insurance Adjuster throughout his employment. Moe loved jazz. He began playing trumpet in dance bands around Norfolk County at the age of 14. He was a member of orchestras such as One Night Stand and The Blue Note Sextet that played throughout the area including the popular Summer Garden. Mr. Long was also a longtime member of the Port Dover Band under bandleader Ed Steele. His musical talent led him to play in The Lions’ Minstrel Shows in Simcoe and he was also involved in little theatre musical productions. Moe enjoyed being a member of the Kinsmen Club, and was also a member of the Dundson Legion. In addition, he was a honourary member of the Port Dover Legion where he was proud to play Last Post and Reveille every Remembrance Day for over 50 years. Through the years, Moe pursued a passion for photography, clock making, and riding his motorcycle. He had a great sense of humour and loved hearing and telling a good joke. His many friends will be forever grateful for the love of music he passed on to them. As per Moe’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and a celebration of his life will be announced at a later date. Cremation has been entrusted to Tranquility Cremation Services. Rest in peace. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice. Support jazz!

Harold Sutherland
SUTHERLAND, Harold. On July 18, 2013 at Norfolk General Hospital, Simcoe after a courageous battle with illness in his 71st year. Survived by his devoted wife Eleanor (nee Currie). Beloved father of Michael (Lorraine), Brian (Corrie) and Jamie (Jane). Proud grandfather of Dylan and Tate of Yukon. Dear brother of Marilyn (Bill) of New Brunswick and Fred (Ingrid) of Port Dover. Harold was an employee of Air Canada Cargo for 35 years; president of the Air Canada Recreation Association (ACRA); and chairperson of the Airline Financial Credit Union. Treasurer of the Meadowvale Minor Hockey League for many years. He will be sadly missed by all his nieces, nephews and family members. Cremation. A memorial service will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion in Port Dover on Thursday, August 8, 2013 between the times of 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. with visitation until 4 p.m. Everyone welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or a charity of choice would be appreciated. Allan Thompson
THOMPSON, Allan Charles. At Norfolk General Hospital, Simcoe on Tuesday, July 9, 2013, Allan Thompson of Port Dover in his 92nd year. Predeceased by his first wife Beatrice (1987). Survived by his wife Estileta, daughter Barbara White (Ronald) of Turkey Point and their children Tammy (Pat) Simms and Sheri (Harry) Kopko, son Jim Thompson of Brantford and his children Chrystlyn and Darryl Thompson and Tyler Thompson-Love. He is also survived by his brother Keith Thompson (Charlene) and sisters Eileen Stuart and Marion Walker (Allan) and sisters-in-law Dorothy and Peggy Thompson. Predeceased by brothers George, Lloyd, Lee and Ken Thompson. Friends were invited to call at Ferris Funeral Home, 214 Norfolk St., S., Simcoe on Friday, July 12, 2013 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. where service was held on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Tom Sero officiated. Jim Brutscher
BRUTSCHER, Jim – On Monday, July 8th, 2013 at the Norfolk General Hospital, after a short struggle with cancer Jim has taken his last “ride into the sunset”. Best friend and soul mate to Laila for 42 years. Big brother to Heidi Vanderslikke (Jack) of Harriston. Brother-in-law to Ingo Karklins of Toronto. Uncle to James Vanderslikke (Willene), Stephanie Smith (Aaron) and Jessica Vanderslikke. Great uncle to Daniel, Cassandra and Romario James. Jim will be missed by his lifelong friend Lester Kirman (Donna), the Edlington family, his horse Brett and many other close friends who will miss Jim’s sense of humour and dry wit. A longtime employee of Stelco, Jim enjoyed 12 good years of retirement, was an avid horseman and for the past 10 years enjoyed his yearly treks to the Black Diamond Range for his cowboy holiday. Predeceased by his parents Alfons Brutscher (1976) and Hildegard (2006). At Jim’s request cremation has taken place. Irene Phillips
PHILLIPS, Irene (nee Noble) of Port Dover, passed away suddenly at her home on Saturday, July 6, 2013, in her 86th year. Predeceased by her beloved husband Joseph and cherished daughter Joanne Novinka. Dearly loved mother and mother-in-law of Edward and Deb, Diane and Brian Lampman and David Novinka and Karen. Proud and loving grandmother of Michael and Lisa, Leslie and Brett, Robin and Andrew, Philip and Elyssa, Derek and Corrie Lynn and great-grandmother of Nicholas, Jacob and Sarah. She will be fondly remembered by her sisters-in-law, Mary Phillips, Lois Keefer and many nieces and nephews. Irene was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother; her family was always first and foremost. She was a very active member of the RCL Ladies Auxiliary Branch #158, giving countless hours of her time to help. Irene will be sadly missed by her bus trip partner Pat Coffer and her good friend Dory Lindsay. Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will take place at a later date. A Celebration of Irene’s life will be held at the Port Dover RCL Branch #158 (Market and St. Patrick Sts.)
