Harold Garton
GARTON, Harold Clifford – Passed away at the Norfolk General Hospital on Friday, March 10, 2017 of Port Dover in his 98th year. Son of the late Gordon and Vera Garton and much beloved husband of the Late Marjorie Culham (2008). Harold is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. A former elementary teacher, he taught at Boston (Ontario) Public School where in one room was responsible for 80-plus students. The Simcoe School Board got wind of this and hired Harold to be the principal of South School until his retirement in 1975 after some 35 years of teaching. Harold was an avid sports fan and was quite the baseball pitcher in his day and could lob a ball with absolutely no spin. As a golfer, he was always a wary opponent and joined the hole-in-one group on at least one occasion. He and his late wife, Marjorie, loved to bicycle throughout many of the streets in Port Dover. This perfect gentleman was loved by many friends and his relatives and enjoyed the respect of many of his supportive neighbours. He also acted, recently, as the “greeter” at the local church Christmas dinners for several years. Ever grateful, he would have wanted to thank the many neighbours who so enriched his life and also the staff at Norfolk General Hospital and the Emergency Measures Services personnel. A celebration of Harold’s life will be held at a later date at The Baldock Funeral Home, 96 Norfolk St. N., Simcoe with interment in the family plot at Alymer Cemetery.
