Michael Mitchell
MITCHELL, Michael of Port Dover passed away at Juravinski Cancer Hospital surrounded by the love of his family, on Monday, June 4, 2018 in his 47th year. Cherished husband of Nadia Waiton. Loving step-father of Charlie Hollander. Dearly loved son of Darcy and Wendy Mitchell. Dear brother of Brad and Jonelle Mitchell. Much loved uncle of Jesse, Savannah and Jepson; and Godfather of Chloe, Olivia and Daxton Bush. He will be sadly missed by his best friends Mac Campbell and Vince Hoskins, his many aunts, uncles, cousins and his faithful companions Huck and Squirt. Mike was an employee of Air Products, and was an Affiliate Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #158; he also enjoyed boating and camping in his free time. Friends are invited to meet with the family to share their memories of Mike on Thursday, June 7, 2018 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Thompson Waters Funeral Home, 102 First Ave., Port Dover (519-583-1530). Peggy Wicker
WICKER, Margaret Agnes (nee Lavers) – With gratitude for her long life, Peggy’s family announces her peaceful passing at Norfolk General Hospital on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at the age of 104. Predeceased by her husband Allan (1995), son Barry (2013) and sister Kay Thompson. Loving mother to Marilyn (Lynn) and David Nigh of Waterloo. Cherished grandmother to Peter Nigh, Laura Murphy and Jeremy and Jose Wicker. Proud great-grandmother of David, Ryan and Katie Murphy and Eric and Sofia Nigh. She will be fondly remembered by daughter-in-law Carol Wicker of Port Dover, niece Pat Thompson of Hamilton, great-nephew Philip and Jen Thompson of Caledonia and cousin Thelma Hammett of England. Peggy was born in 1914 in Winnipeg to parents Dudley and Agnes Laver. Peggy and her sister Kay were raised in Hamilton and in 1935 Peggy married Allan Wicker and lived at 204 First Ave., Port Dover, she lived there until 2013 when she moved to Rosewood (Cedarwood Gardens) Simcoe. Peggy and her husband Allan owned Wicker and Son Insurance for many years, and in the 1960’s their son Barry joined them. She was involved in many activities over the years, including dance, lawn bowling, curling, golf (not her greatest sport), gardening, bridge and Tai Chi. Peggy was a long-time member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church and St. Paul’s Club and catered many Lions Club dinners there. She choreographed all the dances for the Lions Club Variety Shows, danced in them as well and loved the July 1st celebrations and parade. Peggy loved to travel and over the years she had many amazing trips. Friends are invited to a Celebration of Life Memorial Service at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Market and St. George Sts., Port Dover on Monday, June 11, 2018 at 11 a.m. The Reverend Tony Bouwmeester officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to Thompson Waters Funeral Home, Port Dover (519-583-1530). Grace “Marie” Ames
AMES, Grace “Marie” – Passed away June 16, 2018 at Lakeridge Health, Oshawa after a lengthy struggle with heart disease and Alzheimer’s. She is predeceased by her husband of 62 years Donald Ames, a mere six weeks ago. Daughter of the late Harvey and Marguerite Vokes. She is also predeceased by her sisters Audrey Vokes and Katherine Logan. She survived by three children Linda (Ian), Scott (Heather), and Judy (Mike). Dearly missed by grandchildren Zoe, Carly, Nick, Andrew, Meredith, Victoria and Jordan, most recently acquired great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was born and lived in Simcoe, Port Dover and Nanticoke during her young adulthood and early years of marriage. Her three children were born at the Norfolk General Hospital and lived in Port Dover until moving to Oshawa in the late sixties. Her ties to this area remained strong over the years however her favourite meal was served at the Cove Room or Knechtel’s. Marie was an extremely active woman until her health declined. Both she and her husband were excellent dancers, enjoyed extensive road trips over Canada but always finding their way back to their roots on the shore of Lake Erie. Her joy was sharing the activities of her grandchildren, sewing, baking, reading and volunteering with the Girl Guides of Canada over many years. Her remains will be interred with her husbands on Friday, June 21, 2018 at the Mount Lawn Cemetery. If desired, donations in memory of Marie can be made to the Alzheimer Society. Ruth Church
CHURCH: Ruth Agnes (Ewing) – Peacefully at the Norfolk General Hospital, Simcoe on Sunday, June 10, 2018 in her 92nd year. Daughter of the late Russell and Olive (Rung) Ewing. Wife of the late Douglas Church. Loving mother of Diane (2015) and Bruce (2013) Cronkite, Patricia and Norm (2016) Heastont, Robert (Helena) Church and Jim (Donna) Church. Dear grandmother to Laura (Bruce) Feeney, Joe (Stacie) Heastont, Shane (Charmaine) Gowan, Chris (Jennifer) Gowan, Conrad Church, Curtis Church, Jason (Jennifer) Church, Jennifer (Josh) DeWaard ,15 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Ruth is survived by her brother Jack (Inga) Ewing. Predeceased by her sisters and brothers-in-law Kathleen (Clayton) Locke, Dorothy (Roy) Farren and brothers and sisters-in-law Alex (Vi) Ewing and Don (Myrtle) Ewing. Ruth worked at the West Haldimand General Hospital, Hagersville for many years. As per Ruth’s wishes cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life service will take place on Saturday, June 23, 2018 from 1-4 p.m. at the Jarvis Lions Community Centre. The family wishes to thank Dr. Miller and the Staff at the Norfolk General Hospital on 3B, 4B Palliative care and the Staff at Leisure Living, your kindness was appreciated. Murray Shaw
SHAW, Murray Bruce – Passed away at Joseph Brant Hospital, Burlington, on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 in his 88th year. Beloved husband and best friend of Shirley (nee Bodden) for 63 years. Loving father of Lisa Marranca (Tom) of Burlington and Paul Shaw (Sharon) of Mississauga. Cherished grandfather of Justin and Erin (Hiller) and great-grandfather of Davin and Kailey. Dear brother of Vangie Post of Port Dover and brother-in-law of Gary Bodden (Marlene) of Hamilton. Predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Eliza Shaw of Port Dover, brother Norval of Hamilton (1960) and sister Bernice of Mississauga (2009). Murray was a long-time employee of Procor, Oakville. Funeral Service was held in the Chapel of Smith’s Funeral Home, Burlington (905-632-3333) on Friday, April 13, 2018. Interment followed at Burlington Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army or Compass Point Bible Church would be sincerely appreciated by the family.

YOUNGS, Charles Kenneth: January 12, 1943 – June 5, 2018 passed away at Norfolk General Hospital. Predeceased by his parents George Clarence Youngs and Annie Margaretta Youngs (nee Matheson). Ken passed due to sudden severe health issues exactly 3 months after the death of his dear wife Mona Weir, whom he missed terribly. Ken and Mona had a great life together and will now be missed together by all who knew them. Interment to take place at a later date. Paul Blake
BLAKE, Paul of Port Dover, passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital Hamilton, surrounded by the love of his family on Friday, June 22, 2018 in his 62nd year. Cherished father of Justin of St. Catharines and Darby and (Wes Stacey) of Hamilton. Will be sadly missed by Kelley McNamara. Dearly loved brother and brother-in-law of Charles and Shelley of Port Dover and Nancy Jo and Wayne Swan of Port Ryerse. Special thanks to friend Kim Bezanson for making his last few years much brighter. Paul is predeceased by his parents, Mona and Terry, brothers Neil, Scott and Wayne and grandson Douglas. Paul worked with his Dad for many years operating the Texaco Station on Main St., he then was employed by Stelco for the next 25 years. He was an avid Blue Jay fan, loved Bluegrass music and had a keen interest in Army memorabilia.
