Joe Chausic Sr.
CHAUSIC, Joseph “ Hopper ” – Peacefully passed without pain at Dover Cliffs Long Term Care Home in Port Dover, Ontario on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at the age of 89 years. Born on February 15, 1928 in Wasylow, Ukraine. Joseph was the only son of the late Maksym and Ahafia Chauszcz. Joseph is survived by his former spouse and friend Joan (Schuler) Chausic along with his daughter-in-law Melissa (Jolly) Chausic (Jason). Cherished father of Timothy and Joseph Jr. and predeceased by his eldest son Jason Chausic in 2011. Fondly remembered grandfather of Dana, Christopher, and Tamra Chausic. Beloved brother of Ann (Huska) of Welland. Also preceded in death by his sisters Mary (Cooley) and Julie (Hrynkiw) of Brantford. He will be lovingly missed by his numerous nieces and nephews, his many friends, caregivers, and extended family members. Joseph was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist, 93 Terrace Hill Street in Brantford and he enjoyed many celebrations and services there involving his Ukrainian heritage. Joseph was an employee of Gates Rubber Canada until his retirement and worked at the Iroquois and Henry Street plants for a total of 23 years. He was a member of the Gunners Club for many years and was known to many friends and acquaintances as “Hopper” or “Joe Hopper”. His many hobbies included swimming, cycling, bowling league, and he even ventured into roller blading for a time at the youthful age of 77. Anyone who knew Joe from his youth and into his 60s and 70s knew he could hold his own on the dance floor. Be it Ukrainian dance, ballroom or jive. His card was always full. Joseph could be seen in the neighbourhood he grew up in covering the Waterloo, Duke and Pearl Street areas of Brantford when he was young sporting a fedora and his zoot suit. He was a member of the now infamous “Pearl Street Gang”. Later, as a resident of Dover Cliffs, it was learned that one of his ward mates that was bedded down beside him was actually a rival gang member in the same neighbourhood. The two without thought, put the past behind them, shared stories, and became quick friends, as Joseph was always one to forgive past transgressions. Joseph will be missed by his family and many friends and staff members of Briarwood Gardens and Dover Cliffs for his amazing smile, and famous one liners and humour he was known for such as “How ya doin’ kiddo”? He would wait for your response, and always reply with “Well, you’re lookin’ good”. Our family wishes to extend our sincerest thanks to all the family, Thorpe Brothers Funeral Home and Chapel, caregivers of both long-term care facilities, practitioner Mike Godelie of Dover Cliffs, Father Roman, and Father Mironovich for their loving care, service and kindness toward Joseph. A Ukrainian and English prayer service at time of interment will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, 393 St. Paul Ave; Brantford, on Thursday, June 29, 2017 at 3 p.m. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or Canadian Spine Research and Education Fund. Condolences may be left on Thorpe Brothers Funeral Home and Chapel online guest book at: http://obits.dignitymemorial.com/dignity-memorial/obituary.aspx?n=Joseph-Chausic&lc=3687&pid=185843169&mid=7451231&locale=en_CA .
