Harold Earle

EARLE, Harold Dennis – RR3, Simcoe in his 66th year, passed away at Norfolk General Hospital on Thursday, June 28, 2012 after a courageous battle with ALS. Beloved husband and soulmate of 44 years to Elaine Earle (nee Simmons). Loving father of Derek (Carol Ann) and cherished Papa of Ty and Katie Earle. Also surviving are brother Don (Marg), Ingersoll; Deanna Scott, Port Dover; brother Beverley, Binbrook; and brother-in-law David (Gail) Simmons, Port Dover. Predeceased by parents Harry (1964), Doris (1999) and brother John (1981). Dear son-in-law of Albert (Chester) (1975) and Irene (1994) Simmons. Also survived by several nieces and nephews, and a large circle of relatives and friends. Harold owned and operated Bills Septic ’91, Wayne’s Water Wagon, and Harold D. Earle & Son Construction for many years. He was involved with numerous organizations such as Port Dover Kinsmen, Port Dover Lions, PD13 Committee, Port Dover Jr. D Sailors and Port Dover Jr. C Clippers. He coached Minor Hockey, Earle’s Construction Slo Pitch Ball Team and was a member of the Simcoe Harness Club as well as being a Dover Dairy Bar Alumni member. At the family’s request, there will be no visitation. A Service of Remembrance will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, Port Dover on Friday, July 6, 2012 at 11 a.m. Inurnment will follow service at the Port Dover Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held following the Cemetery Service at the Port Dover Legion Br. 158. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made (by cheque only) to ALS Society, Ontario or Knox Presbyterian Church, Port Dover.

Michael Goad

GOAD, Michael of Port Dover passed away at Norfolk General Hospital on Thursday, June 28, 2012 in his 82nd year. Dearly loved husband of Isobel. Loving father and father-in-law of Stephen and Lynn of Stouffville, Jane and David Smith of Port Dover and Fiona Goad of Hamilton. Dearest grandfather of Jessica, Rachael, Simon and Olivia. Michael was a member of the Probus Club of Port Dover. In keeping with Michael’s wishes, cremation has taken place with a private interment. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Edna McMeekin

McMEEKIN, Edna RN (nee Naylor) passed peacefully away on June 29th, 2012 at Southview Retirement Home, Townsend in her 97th year. She joined her beloved husband Sam who pre-deceased her in 1982. Cherished mother of Anthony (Jacquie) of Port Dover and Ewing (Maureen) of Burlington and Trish Kitchen of Alliston. Adoring grandmother of Stacy Shaw, Riley (Tammy), Erin, Kaitlin, James and Daniel. Great-grandmother of Maxim. Survived by brothers Douglas and Herbert Barker of Yorkshire, England. Pre-deceased by sisters Mary, Hilda, Doris, Ivy, May, Joan and brother Jack. Edna proudly served in the ATS during WWII working alongside Princess Elizabeth. After the war she resumed her nursing career in England. She emigrated to Canada in 1949 where she worked at the Hamilton Sanitorium. Soon after, she met her future husband Sam; together they adopted Port Dover as their chosen home. After serving many years in the nursing field at Norfolk General Hospital she took a position at the Port Dover Medical Centre. In this capacity she became known to many townspeople. She will be sorely missed by each and all that knew her. Katie Verbakel

VERBAKEL, Catharina “Katie” Stanislaus (nee Selten) – surrounded by her loving family at the Norfolk General Hospital, Simcoe on Wednesday, June 20th, 2012, the morning of her 88th birthday. Cherished wife of the late Harry Verbakel (March 13th, 2012). Loving mother of John Verbakel (Carolijn) of Tillsonburg, their children Lindsay, Jana, Erik, Gavin, Jessica, Matthew, Samantha and Sarah; Henry Verbakel (Lisa) of London, their sons Derek and Kyle; Jane Hilliker (Brian) of Kitchener, their children Nathan, Carter and Catie; Mary Cunningham (Tom) of Simcoe, their sons Craig and Brent; and by the late Fred Verbakel – 2010 (Christie) of Simcoe, their sons Garrett and Galen. Lovingly remembered by her sisters Mary Van Alphen (John) of Simcoe and Riek Van Katwyk of the Netherlands. Katie will be sadly missed by her many extended family in both Canada and the Netherlands. Katie was a long time member of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, Walsh and a past president of the St. Michael’s CWL Ladies. Katie and Harry emigrated from the Netherlands in 1951 and grew tobacco in Norfolk County until their retirements. Friends were invited to share their memories of Katie with her family at the Jason Smith Funeral Chapel, 689 Norfolk St. North Simcoe for visitation on Tuesday, June 26th, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Parish prayers were said Tuesday evening at 6:45 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Cecilia’s Roman Catholic Church, Port Dover on Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Hank Welch

WELCH, Henry (Hank) Alexander – Surrounded by the love of family and close friends at home in Waterford, Hank passed away in his 78th year on June 22, 2012. Beloved husband and best friend of Sandi (Smith) Welch of Waterford. Our life together was short, but full of adventure. Loving son-in-law of Doris Smith-Guy. Cherished brother of Graham (Leo) and sisters Grace (George) and Marguerite (Brian). Predeceased by sisters Hazel and Norma. Dear uncle of many nieces and nephews. After Hank left Northern Ontario, he first moved to Port Dover, and after many years was happy to be able to return to the Dover area in 1998. He enjoyed many years on the lake. When as a teacher of electronics for many years at Simcoe Composite School and later the department head of Technology Education at Waterford District High School, Hank touched the lives of many. His two great passions in life were music and hockey. In the early years, his musical talents with the popular northern Ontario band, The Rhythm Kings, filled dance halls. He played hockey into his seventies with the “Skatin’ Scolors” and the Waterford Old Pros. A private interment is planned. GILBERTSON, Ellinor (Varey) – Formerly of Simcoe, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2012, in her 98th year. Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Varey of Port Dover. Wife of the late David (Ben) Gilbertson (2002). Sister of the late Brian Varey. Loving mother of Terry Gilbertson (Joan) of Guelph and Martha Mossing (Morley) of Sault Ste. Marie. Cherished Grandmother of Trent (Rina) Gilbertson of Guelph, David (Odelia) Gilbertson of Vancouver, Laura Faint (Darren) of Burlington, Susan Mossing (Paul Brackstone) of Vancouver, and Scott Mossing of Victoria. Great-grandmother of Jack and Oscar Brackstone, Gavin and Keira Faint, Lauren and Marcus Gilbertson and Kyle and Liam Gilbertson. Aunt of Rob Varey (Brenda) of Port Dover and Catharine Gilbertson (Norman Scott) of Waterloo. Ellinor was a long time member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Simcoe, a life member of the Norfolk Heritage Centre and the Norfolk General Hospital Auxiliary. Ellinor graduated from the Hamilton General Hospital as a registered nurse in 1937. Ellinor received wonderful compassionate care from the staff of the Ontario Finnish Rest Home in Sault Ste. Marie. At Ellinor’s request, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Simcoe at a later date. Dorothea Wiley

WILEY, Dorothea Eleanor. Peacefully at Norview Lodge, Simcoe on Thursday, June 21, 2012. Dorothea (nee Hughes), in her 95th year. Cherished wife of the late Cecil Wiley. Cherished mother of Shirley and her husband Moe Plastow of Port Dover. Beloved grandmother of Holly and her husband Shawn Balcomb, and great-grandmother of Shelby and Dylan. Dear sister of the late Stanley Hughes, and survived by her sisters-in-law Margaret Chadwick and Peggy Hughes, nieces, nephews and their families. A former resident of Leaside, Dorothea was an original member and the first violinist of the East York Symphony Orchestra and was formerly an active member at Leaside United Church, Toronto and St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Dover. Henri Lagueux

LAGUEUX, Joseph Napoleon “Henri”, January 10, 1932 – July 10, 2012, at age 80 ½, Henri passed away peacefully at Stedman Hospice, Brantford with his wife and daughters at his side, after a short battle with cancer. Wife, partner and best friend of June (love bug) for 32 years. Loving father and father-in-law of Debbie, Gaetane (George), George (Cynthia), Greg (Joanne) Chris (Tiffany), Andrew, Jacquie (Steve). Dearly loved grandfather of 19 and great-grandfather of 9. Dear brother of Claire, Lucille, Mendoza, Gaetane, Denis, Gilbert, and Aline. He will be sadly missed by many relatives and friends, especially at the Legion and in Avalon Park. Predeceased by his daughter Joan, his parents Alcide and Agathe and his brother Michel. Henri served for 20 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He worked for 23 years with the City of Etobicoke as Fleet Safety Supervisor before retiring to Port Dover in August of 1993. One of his ambitions was to visit as many Legion halls as possible, he got to over 80. Henri was a RCL member of Branch #528 for 18 years and Branch #158 for 18 years. Henri loved hockey, curling, fishing and euchre. He had a great sense of humour and lit up the room wherever he went and always had a great joke to tell. Thanks to all the staff at Norfolk General Hospital, Stedman Hospice, St. Elizabeth home care and CBI Nursing, Dr. Wong and Dr. Hall. A special thanks to all the neighbours and friends who provided help and support during his time of illness. YEREX, Ruth (nee Carter) of Port Dover, passed away at Norview Lodge, Simcoe on Thursday, July 12, 2012, with her loving family by her side, in her 86th year. Predeceased by her husband Hilton. Loving and cherished mother and mother-in-law of Greg and Rosemarie Yerex and Julia and Brad Mullin all of Port Dover. Much loved grandmother of Nick, Sean, Allison and Margo. Dearest sister of Betty Bedford of Simcoe. Predeceased by her brothers Harry Carter and Herb Carter, both of Simcoe, her sisters Eva Bunce of U.S.A., Ethel Vanderkroft of Tillsonburg, Lloy King of Simcoe and Mildred McCall of Tillsonburg. Before her retirement, Ruth was the former Director of Children’s Aid and Past President of the Ontario Real Estate Board, Past President of the Simcoe and District Real Estate Board. Ruth and her husband Hilton were the former proprietors of the Norfolk Hotel (Tilt’n Hilton) in Port Dover. Ruth was a long time member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church. Lynne Donovan

DONOVAN, Lynne – Peacefully at the Norfolk General Hospital, on Monday, July 23, 2012 with family by her side in her 74th year. Mother of Jack (Joann) Donovan of Edmonton, Michael Donovan of Vancouver, sister to Ronna (Murray) Aldgate of Ancaster, Bev (Austin) Layden of Caledonia, and Gwenn Barton of Brantford. Aunt to six nieces and one nephew, two great-nephews and one great-niece. Lynne was very active in the Port Dover Community. Lynne was an involved member of the Knox Presbyterian Church, singing in the choir and member of the Heather Club, she also volunteered at the Lighthouse Festival Theatre for over 10 years, as well as being a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and recent recipient of the Port Dover Lions Club Helen Keller Fellowship Award for her continued community service to others. Lynne will be fondly remembered as the weekly basket ticket seller at the Saturday morning Lions Farmers Market. As per Lynne’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral. Those wishing to honour Lynne’s memory may make a donation to any of the organizations to which she gave her faithful time and energy.
