Jean Rattai
RATTAI, Jean Elizabeth — Passed peacefully on Monday, January 21, 2019 in her 92nd year at Lakeridge Health, Bowmanville. Beloved wife of the late Wilfred. Much loved mom to Keith (Alison), Pam (Gerry), Murray (Beth) and Douglas. Cherished grandmother to Courtney, Dakota, Matthew and Madison, and great-grandma to Aiden, Destyn, Kaiya and Aura. Dear sister to Donald Young (the late Stella) and dear sister-in-law to Vera Lucko. At Jean’s request cremation has taken place with no funeral service. Shirley Robertson
ROBERTSON, Shirley (Strain) of Port Dover and Hamilton. Passed away on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 in her 82nd year. She will now be reunited with her beloved husband of 42 years, Arthur Robertson. She is predeceased by her sister Norah Elliott of Northern Ireland. She will be sadly missed by her loving children Art Jr. (Marg), Pauline (Hal), Darlene (Gerry), Gord (Cherryl); grandchildren Gregory, Steven (Justine), Craig (Lisa), Katie (Carlo); great-grandchildren Kaiden, Kendra, Hannah, William, Clara, and Ian. Shirley was a member of the Woodhouse United Church in Port Dover as well as a member of its Auxiliary. Shirley loved living in Port Dover until the passing of her husband Arthur in 2017. Cremation has taken place and a memorial will be held in honour of her life at Stoney Creek United Church, 1 King Street, W., Stoney Creek on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. Rev. K. Vance from Woodhouse Church will be officiating in the company of Rev. J. Smith. We would like to give thanks to both Rev. Vance and Smith for their prayers and support. Thanks also to the Palliative Care Team and staff of Hamilton General Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations to Woodhouse United Church Ladies’ Auxiliary would be appreciated.

Jan Church
CHURCH, Jan — On Sunday, January 6, 2019, Janet Jean Church (Jan), daughter, sister, aunt and great-aunt, passed away at Telfer Place in Paris, Ontario at the age of 71 years. She was born to the late Leonard and Margaret (Marr) Church of Jarvis and later of Fenelon Falls. Jan will be forever remembered by sisters Elayne (George) Wardell, Linda Miedema and Joan Church, brother Earl Church; nieces and nephews Glenn (Bev) Wardell, Lynn (Bob) Aitchison, Rob (Shannon) Miedema, Christy (Darryl Hunt) Miedema, Dustin (Stephanie) Minns, Jordan Minns, Jacob (Ashley) Wardell, Nakita Minns, Jarrod Wardell; great-nieces and nephews Logan, Paige and Margot Miedema, Audrey Miedema-Hunt, Clinton Minns, Maisie Minns; and extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her brother John Church in 1996. A Celebration of Life will be held for Jan on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 12:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Church, 48 Broadway Street West, Paris, Ontario. Those who desire to do so, are invited to make memorial donations in memory of Jan to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or the Canadian Wildlife Federation.

SHAW, Gloria “Laura” (nee Skogen) passed away on Monday January 13, 2019 at Norfolk General Hospital in her 83rd year. Dear mother of Christopher and daughter-in-law Teresa of Charlotte, North Carolina and son-in-law Tim McCullough of Port Dover. Predeceased by her husband Cunningham and daughter Vici. Joan Gray
GRAY, Margaret “Joan” passed away on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at Dover Cliffs LTC in her 82nd year. Loving mother of Kenneth (Marilyn) of Essex, John (Ginnie) of Caledonia, Marilyn (William) Clark of Dresden and son-in-law Mike Margetan (Marilyn) of Vittoria. Fondly remembered by her brothers Robert (Debbie) Fawcett, Gary (Yvonne) Fawcett all of Shelburne, James and Gloria Fawcett of Brampton and Wayne and Barbara Fawcett of Haliburton. Proud grandmother of Donald, Amanda, Kyle, Melissa, Russell, Eric, Britany, Christopher and great-grandchildren Nekka, Dominick, Shaelynn and Hunter. Sadly missed by sisters-in-law Margaret Henderson and Audrey Gray both of Georgetown. Predeceased by her husband Ron, daughter Debbie and parents William and Christena. Joan enjoyed playing cards, curling and a few rounds of golf. She was also a long time member of Knox Presbyterian Church. William Varey
VAREY, William Francis – Of Port Ryerse, passed away on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 in his 89th year. Beloved husband of Mary Louise (Cutting). Loving father of Brian (Anne), Cathy Buckle, Mike (Darcy), Anne Gosse (Kevin), father-in-law of Louise Goos. Cherished grandfather and great-grandfather. Also surviving is his loving brother John (friend Elaine), brother-in-law Skip Cutting (Betty), sister-in-law Eleanor Wilson, numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his son Stephen, son-in-law Duncan Buckle, brother-in-law Jim Cutting and sister-in-law Betty Varey. Bill worked as a special service man for Union Gas and enjoyed a long retirement spending winters camping in the Florida Keys and summers at the cottage in Port Ryerse. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a later date with a private graveside service. South Coast Funeral & Cremation Alternatives, 71 Norfolk St. N., Simcoe in care of arrangements. Bernice Ziegler
ZIEGLER, Bernice Margaret (Robinson). Bernice passed away on December 27, 2018.
Born in 1956 in Hamilton, Ontario and lived there up until four years ago when we fulfilled her dream to retired in Port Dover. Survived by her brother Wayne (Jaqueline) Robinson. Predeceased by her parents Leslie and Margaret Robinson. She was married to Peter just shy of 44 years. Bernice was a five-year volunteer at Hamilton Place after which she moved on to Theatre Aquarius where she volunteered for 17 years. We moved to Port Dover in 2015 and Bernice became a Volunteer at the Lighthouse Festival Theatre until she could no longer attend. Besides the theatre, her other passion was her several cats and dogs over many years – always rescues who lived a full life in her care.
She fell in love with Port Dover 15 years ago when we first started to rent a quaint little cottage here and was so very happy to move here when we retired. She leaves an emptiness in the hearts of her cat Sophie and dog John.
I miss you so very much.

Ken McIntosh

McINTOSH, Kenneth – Passed away peacefully at Norfolk General Hospital on January 1, 2019 in his 73rd year. Will be sadly missed by his friends at Dover Cliffs LTC and Norfolk Association for Community Living. Ken’s friends will remember him for his broad smile and his warm, distinguishable laugh. Ken enjoyed spending summer afternoon’s near the lake in Port Dover fishing off of the pier, and socializing at his local coffee shop with his favourite beverage in hand. Friends were invited to share their memories of Ken on Monday, January 7, 2019 at 10 a.m. followed by a service at 11.a.m. to Celebrate Ken’s life at Thompson Waters Funeral Home, 102 First Ave., Port Dover (519-583-1530). Nancy Bell
BELL, Nancy Jean (nee Morley) passed away peacefully with family at her side on Tuesday, December 25, 2018 at Norfolk General Hospital. Loving wife of Ted Bell, dear mother of Rodney Bell and friend Rebecca of Hamilton, Melinda Bell of Simcoe and Melodie King of Paris. Proud grandmother of Joseph, Chelsey and Madison. Sadly missed by her siblings Larry (Marilyn) Morley of Dundas and Sharon (Al) Moffat of Cheapside. Predeceased by her parents Charles and Jean, granddaughter Breanne, sister Myrna and brother-in-law Jim Toth. Nancy enjoyed time spent with family, being in the garden and loved to shop. In keeping with Nancy’s wishes cremation has taken place with a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date. Betty Jones
JONES, Elizabeth (Betty) nee Thomson after a short illness we have to say goodbye to our most special Mum. Predeceased by the love of her life, husband Ron (1995). Mum will always be cherished and so missed by daughters and sons-in-law, Linda (Paul) Nameth and Diane (Randy) Whitehouse. Loving Nana to Melany, Corey (Tracy), Daniel (Julie) and Sean (Nicole). Proud and loving Great-Nana to Madelyn, Sophie, Colton and Marshall. Dearest cousin to Beth Guy and dear aunt to many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Grace and William Thomson, sisters and their husbands Grace (Harry) Bonner and Anna (Murray) Pett. Mum and Dad raised their family in Hamilton, upon their retirement moved to Southampton and in 2013 Mum moved to Port Dover to be closer to her girls. In all these years Mum was an accomplished 5-pin bowler; earning many singles, teams and coaching awards and made so many wonderful lifelong friendships in the joy of the sport. Mum was inducted into the O5PBA Hall of Fame as a player in 1993 and again as a builder in 2013. In 2007 Mum was inducted into the Hamilton 5 Pin Bowlers Association Hall of Fame. Mum and Dad enjoyed golfing together and all the friendships that golf brought them through the years. Mum could still hit a mean drive off the tee, she was a great example of an active life well lived. Arrangements have been entrusted to Thompson Waters Funeral Home, (519-583-1530). A Visitation will be held Saturday, January 5, 2019, from 1-4 p.m. at The Royal Canadian Legion at 435 Limeridge Road E., Hamilton. Elizabeth Stephens
STEPHENS, Esther “Elizabeth” (nee Orford) passed away at Parkview Nursing Home in Hamilton on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 in her 100th year. Predeceased by her husband Colonel “Curly” Stephens. Dearly loved mother and mother-in-law of Michael of North Bay, Bob and Sandra of Burlington, and Bruce of Erieo. Cherished grandmother of 19 and a great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother to many. Predeceased by her sons Bill and his wife Marie, Ted and his wife Eileen, Lyle, Dwayne and his wife Barbara and her daughter Gail Rolston and her husband Bill. Elizabeth was born on Manitoulin Island and moved to Port Dover in the late 1940s. She was a member of the Silver Lake Rebekah Lodge # 150 serving as Past Noble Grand. Elizabeth will be sadly missed by all those who knew her, including the staff and residents at Parkview Nursing Home, where she received excellent care. A special thank you to all the staff that shared in Elizabeth’s life. Friends were invited to share their memories of Elizabeth at visitation on Sunday, December 30, 2018 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thompson Waters Funeral Home, 102 First Ave., Port Dover (519-583-1530). A Rebekah Service was held at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. A Service to Celebrate Elizabeth’s life was held in the funeral home Chapel on Monday, December 31, 2018 at 12 noon.
