Port Dover Midget Pirates hockey team is in the Ontario Minor Hockey Assn. finals. The road to this impressive position came about by having a strong season, then in playoff action defeating Six Nations and Belmont.
Port Dover Midget Pirates are in a playdown ‘C’ series with Norwood. Game one was in Norwood on Saturday (March 15). The final score was 4-0 in favour of Norwood.
Assistant Coach Paul Murphy told The Maple Leaf, “we started out a little nervous and in the first period Norwood scored three power-play goals. He said when the Pirates got adjusted to their style we allowed them only one more goal during the game.
Assistant Coach Murphy stated, “in fact, in the third period we outplayed them and that is the momentum we are taking into Saturday’s game (and the series)”.
Game two will be played this Saturday, (Mar. 22) in Port Dover at 5:00 p.m. Team coaches and players are hopeful there will be strong fan support at the game. Game 3 is in Norwood the next day (Sunday, Mar. 23) at 5 p.m. Game 4 is scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in Talbot Gardens, Simcoe. Game 5 is the next day (Sunday) in Norwood at 6 p.m. Game 6 is scheduled for April 1 in Talbot Gardens, Simcoe.
All games will consist of three 15-minute periods with a sudden victory 10-minute overtime period (if needed). It is a three wins or 6-point series.
Game one in the previous Belmont series on Feb. 28 ended in a tie (one point to each side); game two in Belmont was a 5-3 win for Port Dover (two points); game 3 was another victory for the Pirates 4-2 thereby giving Port Dover 5 points to 1 in the six-point series. Game 4 in Port Dover was won by the hometown team 2-1 which gave Pirates the necessary 6 points for the series win.
