Annual free turkey dinner at The Coffee Shop Christmas Eve

DSCF3245The 10th annual Free Christmas Dinner served by The Coffee Shop at 309 Main Street will take place on Tuesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve day). Dinner will be served from 11 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
When Kathy and Dave Mercey purchased the restaurant over three years ago they continued the tradition that began with owners Dave and Jill Eaton.
A year ago the couple hosted a record 120 guests, the previous year there were 93 diners.
“People just come,” says Dave, adding, “some are our regular customers, others are folks we see every Christmas Eve day, some are people living alone, we have a good mix of people”.
The menu is roast turkey (four birds with a total weight of 70 pounds), mashed potatoes, stuffing, homemade cranberry sauce, tea and coffee.
The turkeys are donated, as are much of the other foods. Volunteers come to assist with the preparations and serving, including dish washing and clean-up afterwards. Kathy says, “people are very supportive”.
Dave stated that ‘take-out’ will be available on Dec. 24 for people who call ahead on Dec. 23 up to 4:00 p.m. A volunteer driver will make deliveries within Port Dover. The number to call is 519 583-1483.
Some diners insist on leaving a donation. It will all be directed to aid one-year-old Ryder, son of Melissa Reu and Josh Mandryk, who has a serious health issue. His parents are faced with heavy expenses not entirely covered by government plans.
